The essential brushing of teeth: why?
The teeth have a hard shell which is enamel. However hard it is, some bacteria in the mouth can attack it and cause cavities. Brushing reduces this risk by reducing their ability to act.
A lost tooth cannot be rebuilt!
Just like personal hygiene, dental hygiene can be learned. Brushing your teeth requires support, method and regularity. Your child must learn brushing techniques so that he can brush his teeth on his own.
Brushing is a complex movement.
At the beginning you will brush their teeth yourself then, around 8 years old (a child is able to brush his teeth properly alone, when he is able to make his laces or to write 4 or 5 lines in writing attached so fluid), he can start doing it alone. Progressive autonomy, never overnight; it is best to delegate brushing in the morning, then in the evening, 1 evening out of 2, then 2 evenings out of 3 and, gradually, it will take the path of autonomy …
Brush with method
Brush thoroughly, the top then the bottom. Count 15 round trips outside, on top and inside the teeth, on all 4 sides, not forgetting the front teeth. Brush gently with regularity, making small circular movements. Above all, carefully brush the 1st permanent molar, also known as the “6 year old tooth” which appears around 6 years old, behind the last baby tooth. Its importance is crucial because it is the “pivot” of all future dentition; but she is very vulnerable! Its terminal position makes it difficult to access at the back of the mouth, its very hollow furrows are quickly “blocked” by the food it crushes and compacts, finally its enamel will not be really well “hard” until about 2 years after its eruption. All of this makes it the tooth most at risk from cavities in your child’s mouth. Take care of it!
A consultation with your dentist can be an opportunity to deepen the brushing method in more detail, with support!
When should you brush them?
At least twice a day: in the morning, after breakfast, and in the evening before bedtime. This time spent brushing must become a real reflex. Once your teeth are brushed at night, your child should no longer drink (apart from, possibly, plain water) or, of course, eat.
What about food? Does it play an important role?
For your growing child, as for his teeth more strictly, there are a few essential dietary rules to follow:
- Drink plain water without additives at the table (like syrups), and between meals.
- Drink no more than 1 glass of fruit juice per day and no more than 2 soda per week. Drinking plain water afterwards does not reduce the risk that this consumption generates. Only brushing can achieve this.
- Be satisfied with 4 meals, without snacking. First because the mouth needs to rest between meals, and also because the tartar will settle more easily!
- Be wary of foods that are too soft and too sticky (cereals, compotes to drink …), or harder (hazelnuts, peanuts …) more difficult to remove when brushing. The “top” of the worst is hazelnut chocolate!
Fluorine: yes or no?
Fluoride taken by mouth (which then passes into the blood) should not be prescribed for children 6 years of age and older. Pediatricians often prescribe oral fluoride, but in limited quantities (0.25 mg / day) and only from the age of 6 months, up to 2 years.
Indeed it should be known that there are several sources of fluorine: tap water, (the rate varying according to the regions), bottled water (water suitable for water in baby bottles contains less than 0, 5 mg / l fluorine), salt, and finally a fluoride toothpaste. This is usually enough. In some very specific cases the dentist may use fluoride topically, directly in contact with the enamel. Excess fluoride can be harmful: most often simply by changing the appearance of the teeth with small white lines on the enamel, (it’s just unsightly) but also by creating a real pathology with accelerated destruction of the E-mail. This can happen in areas where tap water is too rich in fluoride.
