In summer, as in winter, we all dream of having perfectly smooth and silky legs! To achieve this result, daily maintenance is essential. Here are all of our tips for waxing your legs like a pro.
WHY PREFER DEPILATION WITH WAX TO OTHER ALTERNATIVES?
Several techniques are possible to wax your legs: waxing, razor, depilatory cream, electric epilator? But why do beauty professionals tend to turn to traditional hair removal? This is the technique most used in a salon; it allows hair to be removed effectively, leaves the skin soft, and lasts between 3 and 4 weeks. And above all, during regrowth, the hairs are finer and less numerous.
STEP 1: PREPARE YOUR SKIN BEFORE DEPILATION IS ESSENTIAL
To obtain soft and perfectly shaved legs, it is essential to prepare your skin before waxing. Do not panic! Here is the “ideal” routine to adopt:
First of all, it is important to exfoliate the area to be waxed. We opt for a body scrub to perform 48 to 72 hours previously to remove the thin layer of dead cells that covers the epidermis. Performing an exfoliation facilitates removing potential ingrown hairs and allows the hair to be removed from the first pass, thanks to the wax’s better adhesion.
We are all aware that it is imperative to hydrate your skin daily and systematically maintain its elasticity, softness, and radiance. You apply a cream, milk, or even an oil depending on your skin type: hydration, therefore, becomes a daily reflex!
Before waxing, it is important to apply pre-depilatory lotion or talcum powder to prepare your skin. The wax will adhere more easily, and we will avoid ending up with redness or inflammation.
STEP 2: DEPILATION, WHICH WAX TO CHOOSE?
After properly preparing your skin for hair removal, another dilemma arises: Should you use hot/warm wax or cold wax? We will explain everything to you.
Hot wax is usually the most used for leg hair removal, suitable for all skin types; it covers large areas.
There are different hot/warm waxes, such as peelable waxes (pearls, pebbles, fat-soluble / fluid) with or without a strip used with a wax heater. Or cartridges and their refills, which are used with tapes and may be more manageable for home use.
Hot/lukewarm waxes need to read the directions for use, especially about melting points, to avoid the risk of burns.
How to use peel-off wax without strip?
- We start by heating the wax in a pot heater; before applying it to the leg, we perform a heat test inside the wrist to check the wax’s correct temperature. In the meantime, we cleanse his skin with a per-depilation lotion.
- With the spatula, apply the wax in the direction of hair growth (always), then form a mini “bead,” which will facilitate removal.
- We wait a few seconds for the wax to be quite dry (not too long so as not to break the hair), then we pull out with a sharp blow in the opposite direction of hair growth using the mini “bead.”
- If a few stubborn hairs have persisted, use tweezers to remove them gently. Then we apply post-depilatory milk or oil to relieve the skin.
- How to use hot wax with strips?
- We heat the wax. To wait, we apply the per-depilation treatment. Once the wax has warmed up, we check whether it is too hot on the back of the hand.
- Apply the wax in thin layers to the area to be dilapidated using the spatula (always in the hair direction). We take a strip and position it on the wax.
- To allow better adhesion of the wax to the strip, it is recommended to make a few light strokes so that the wax “traps” the hairs (leave a corner free to facilitate removal).
- We pull out with a sharp blow, pulling against the direction of hair growth. If a few hairs remain, use the tweezers to remove them. Finally, we apply post-depilatory oil or milk to relieve the skin.
- But be careful; for all those who have fragile, irritated skin, eczema, or are subjected to circulatory problems, it is preferable to turn to the cold wax, which is perfectly suitable for sensitive and reactive skin.
How to use the cold wax strips?
- Beforehand, the area to be depilated is cleaned with a pre-depilatory lotion.
- We choose the bands’ size according to the area to be depilated; for the legs, we opt instead for bands for the body, which have dimensions that cover more surface.
- We heat the wax by rubbing it between his hands to soften it, then delicately peel off the 2 strips.
- Apply a strip to the area to be waxed in the direction of hair growth, then rub vigorously to make it adhere. Then you pull it out with a sharp blow against the direction of growth.
- We take tweezers to remove persistent hairs; then, we apply our post-depilatory oil or milk.
STEP 3: THE POST-DEPILATION ROUTINE, THE “RELAX” MOMENT FOR OUR LEGS
After removing all the hairs from our legs, it is necessary to pamper your skin by applying a post-depilation treatment. We select oil or milk to calm redness and soothe the skin while moisturizing it. It is also possible to apply an anti-regrowth emulsion, which can make hair removal last longer.
After waxing, a few rules must be observed: it is better to avoid exposing yourself to the sun or taking a boiling bath (bath, hammam, sauna, Jacuzzi) for at least 24 hours. The skin will restructure itself to regain its natural state during this time.
